Whilst the two words, 'Leadership' and 'Management' are often grouped together, their meanings, connotations and imagery can be very different, which can be confusing. They can be mutually exclusive, which isn't helpful either. A great leader may have the vision, charisma and the power to inspire and mobilise people but lack the traditional managerial 'process' skills. A manager may expediently manage processes and make great business decisions but lack people leadership skills. Our environment today would seem to call for both skill sets, which can be even more challenging.  It was once viewed that Leaders were 'born' as opposed to 'made'. Happily, for the majority of us, current Leadership and Management theories suggest that we can learn and develop behaviours that envelop these two areas..if we are prepared to apply ourselves and be brave.

Leading and Managing people can be hugely rewarding and simultaneously challenging and we acknowledge that fact. People come with their full range of motivations, emotions, aspirations and skill sets, and it's the manager's responsibility to maximise all of that human potential to contribute towards the success of the organisation.
